What causes a household voltage to increase and decrease?

The voltage in the house that my friend rents in peculiar. At times the lights will dim and brighten seemingly on their own. The brightness may also change when other lights are turned on or off, if the fridge door is opened, etc. The house is small, with a well pump, water heater, 2 bedroom, kitchen, living room, 1 bathroom, outside lights, etc. The landlord%26#039;s house operates off the same transformer, and he has no problems. An electrician checked it out and found that when the voltage drops on one pole, the other increases, and vice versa. No matter what the sum of the poles is about 248. Each pole had the same number of single pole breakers, but the electrician moved them so all single pole breaker are on one pole, and the problem is still there. They also saw the same problems when they tried different combinations of unplugging the fridge, unscrewing light bulbs, shutting breakers off, etc. f%26#039;d like to use my ohmmeters and lengths of wire to check the continuity of ground, neutral, and hot lines between different outlets and light fixtures when the main breaker is off. It seems to me that there%26#039;s a problem with a ground and/or neutral line somewhere, but I%26#039;m not sure where. Maybe somwhere the neutral and hot lines are switched. Any ideas about what could cause this?|||Good observation on your part about the ground. That sounds like a good place to start. Some houses use aluminum wire from the panel to the grounding rod outside or to a city water line going thru the ground and those connections get loose after a while from the wire expanding and contracting all the time. Do a pure copper connection from your panel to the ground source

I would just pound in a new copper 8-10 foot ground rod outside or make a new clean connection on your water line (grounding rod is better I think, especially if you can find a %26quot;wetter%26quot; area )

Most houses now require 2 grounding sources set a certain distance apart. So put in a new ground rod and connect it up to the main panel and try that. If you have really dry soil in your area, use the longest rod you can find. If the soil gets really dry, it%26#039;s not a very good ground.

The other thing I would check is to see if the house is wired anywhere with aluminum wire. Aluminum is good, but it has a tendency to get loose at the connection points and get a layer of oxide that causes higher resistance. If you have that wire, just sand off the ends a little and put some dielectric grease on there to help stop oxidation and retighten connections

additional details:

If it isn%26#039;t the ground being bad, it could be the wires going from the electric meter to the main panel. If the wires are loose inside the electric meter that go to your panel, that dimming could be caused by arcing in the loose connections. Dimming in general is caused by either broken wires or loose connections or bad grounds, so it has to be one of the three if the other house is fine and comes from the same transformer.

You should get permission from your electric company to remove the meter cover and look at those connectors and also recheck the main fuse entry into the panel|||There is not enough power going into your house.

Since the total voltage is remaining constant, but the individual sums is varying, that tells me that the center point is moving. The center point is the ground. Obviously it is not %26quot;tagged%26quot; correctly and is shifting around depending on your branch loads.|||Get a small plug in outlet checker. It looks like a stand 3 prong plug with a set of lights on it. You plug it into each outlet and it will tell you if the outlet is wired wrong or as a previsous persaid you have a floating ground.

This will help isolate the problem.

Do this SOON.

Is this story too light-hearted?

I am a light sleeper who awakens at the slightest provocation. I keep a night light burning because I tend to wake up a lot during the night. No matter what, I am always up before first light. Last night I was awakened by a huge crash very near to the house. Grabbing a flash light, I went to the window. I could see fairly well due to the moonlight and the illumination provided by the porch light, but my visual inspection shed little light on what happened. When I went outside to see, I saw a pole leaning against the new light stand I put by the garage yesterday. I decided not to wait until morning to move it when I would be busy with the light chores my wife always has for me to do. It was a light pole, so I was able to move it easily, but when I stood up after setting it down, I got lightheaded.

I frequently get light-headed and my doctor, a very light hearted man, is treating me regularly. He is usually a beacon of hope, but the other day he told me that he saw no light at the end of the tunnel in my case. He advised me to come directly to his office, day or night, the next time I had a spell. He wants to try a new laser light technique that is supposed to lighten or stop such spells.

I hate driving over there at night though. I have to drive through the red-light district, and there are a lot of traffic lights. Deciding to wait until morning, I headed back to the house but as I reached the steps, every thing went dark. I woke up in an ambulance with red lights flashing and the siren wailing. Fortunately, my doctor had been called and arrived at the hospital just as I did. He had a great idea and using the laser light he brought with him, managed to keep my lights from going out permanently.

The experience changed my life. Though I鈥檒l never be light on my feet again, I have seen the light and my life is now full of lightness and joy. I work in my garden daily, tending the bulbs and seeds I planted. Its light work and gives me much joy. I plan to pass the rest of my days out of the spotlight and hope to see the light of redemption someday.|||You need to lighten up a bit,get a girlfriend to be the light of your life and stop smoking lights,eat a light meal that will stop you feeling light headed but you will still be light hearted|||Light hearted hard to say. It was an easy read to me which is a good thing. How ever, what happened in the Huge Crash??

and I would say you need to build your caricatures up more so I care about them then it would be more heavy hearted.

What do you think of this?

I found this scene in a journal i have of bits of writing that I keep for fun. I don%26#039;t even remember what story I wrote this for, but i thought it was pretty good for something I don%26#039;t remember writing. Tell me what you think!

When Demonica stepped through the door with a candle in her hand, all she heard was the muffled clink of chains, then everything was silent. Beyond her tiny circle of candlelight, all was dark. She took five more steps into the black. The clack of each footstep against the cement echoed as loud as thunder compared to the silence all around.

Demonica waved her candle through the air until it found a boy with eyes and hair as black as night. He was leaning lazily against the wall with his wrists handcuffed to a pole next to him, observing his surroundings for the first time he had the chance. There wasn%26#039;t much to observe. He was in a small, concrete room with a few rusty pipes running along one wall and a shattered light-bulb hanging from a wire on the ceiling. Then he turned to Demonica.

%26quot;What do you want, brat?%26quot;

Demonica flashed a smile. %26quot;Well, I was planning on helping you, but if you%26#039;re going to act like that it might just change my mind.%26quot;

He glared at her with eyes that said: %26#039;take a step closer, you won%26#039;t like what happens next.%26#039; He smirked. %26quot;Don%26#039;t waste your time. I don%26#039;t need anyone%26#039;s help, especially yours.%26quot;

%26quot;Says the kid who%26#039;s still helplessly handcuffed to a wall.%26quot;

%26quot;Not for long.%26quot;

%26quot;Sure. I%26#039;d like to see you try to get out of here.%26quot;

%26quot;Watch me.%26quot;

%26quot;I am.%26quot;

The boy looked down at his handcuffs and scowled, which made Demonica let out a laugh. It looked like what used to be the superman of crime had turned into Lois Lane.

Demonica set the candle on the floor next to his feet. %26quot;You%26#039;re Daniel, right? Danny Jenson?%26quot;

Danny just kept scowling at her.

%26quot;Right. I%26#039;ve heard a lot about you, and I get why you hate me so much. You think that good girls and villains shouldn%26#039;t mix.%26quot; Demonica reached into her pocket and pulled out a bobby pin, taking the rubber end off of it and bending it twice at the end. %26quot;I don%26#039;t think you%26#039;re a villain. Angry at the world, maybe, but not a villain. And you know, you%26#039;ve never really gotten to know any of the good guys.%26quot; She held the bent bobby pin out to Danny and he took it. %26quot;Maybe you should start now.%26quot;

Demonica turned and walked out the door, leaving Danny alone with the bobby pin. He slid it into the keyhole on one handcuff, wiggled it from side to side, and heard a click. He did the same to the other cuff, and the handcuffs slid off his wrists.

Getting to know one of the good guys. Now that was an idea to get used to. Maybe it wasn%26#039;t such a bad idea. After all, Demonica did let him go...

%26quot;Naw.%26quot; Danny said out loud. Being bad was too much fun to change sides now. That brat had made a mistake letting him go, and he was going to make sure she knew it.

Right as soon as he found a way out of that place.

What do you think of this short story?

We sit together in a stone room. The naked bulb swings lazily, like a whispered word on a breeze to nowhere. I watch it move back and forth, a metronome for my blank thoughts. Together we sigh. The vibrations of broken dreams quake through my being. The insides of my eyelids appease me as I am lulled into a deep sleep. I hear the reserved gurgles of the blood in my veins. My blinking slows. The floor and my back become one. We sink deeper into the plush concrete floor. I hear the murmurs of a thousand past companions beneath me, above me only the cold ceiling (although the image of clouds is still burned into my retinas). If I owned my tears, I would cry. Cry for the loss of innocence. But that would break my concentration. So we sit, the light bulb and I, swaying to the merry tune of despair. The stale air cycles through my lungs. Oxygen screams. I hold a silent funeral in my lungs. The corpse storms off to the heavens of the ceiling. All is at peace. The walls are singing in the low baritone voice of doubt. I smell fear and sweat and safety. And they sing too. I tighten my calf muscles. And they sting and they cry now. And the singing stops. The walls run away. The smells hide beneath my shirt. The light bulb mocks me from its perch. I am levitating. I hear a deep humming. It gets louder. It steals the children in my brain. They scream. They are alone now. Distant. They are lost. We are lost. We float in a red wagon to the core. Numbers steal my eyebrows. A man with white-tipped shoes pokes at a caged idea with a metal pole. I hear a moan. The man giggles. We all take off our shoes and socks so as not to disturb the sands of time. The foundation shifts and I fall through the cracks. I flash an indigo distress signal to the pilot of my mind. The steam breaks my fall. I see a dark man with a change purse. He smiles warmly while his hands melt into the floor. I tremble. The dismembered voice of the bulb whispers. And so I melt too, into the floorboards of hysteria. I am now surrounded by the sparkle of new coins. I hear the muffled sound of running water in the distance. The floor is solid. I am stationary. So I sit and whistle to the tune of lost thoughts, my hair follicles dancing to the beat of my trapped soul.|||dude that was like reading an acid trip....

What do you think of the opening chapter to the novel I'm writing?

It was one of those days where everything felt brand new, Alan Kinsley had told himself. It had rained nonstop the day before, with one band of rain after another moving through the northern panhandle region of Florida. It had been windy and nasty for nearly twenty-four hours, when finally, the skies cleared and made way for abundant sunshine. Alan was standing in his backyard, coffee mug in one hand, a menthol cigarette in the other, admiring Mother Nature at her finest.

The sky seemed bluer than usual, without a single cloud dotting its huge canvas. Everything seemed cleaner, having been thoroughly washed by yesterday’s downpours. Taking a drag off the cigarette, Alan noted the debris scattered around the yard. Dead limbs laid everywhere, having dangled precariously for weeks from their respective trees before succumbing to the constant onslaught of wind.

One large branch in particular was hanging over the power line connecting his house to the main pole out front. The limb wasn’t large enough to be overly concerned with, after all, the power company designed those cables with a certain amount of strength, but Alan didn’t like the idea of climbing up a ladder and removing the branch himself. That’s what the power company’s Hotline was for. He made a mental note to give them a call as he finished his coffee.

He had never been comfortable with electricity. Not to the point of refusing electrical service to his home, but if the only available job was that of an electrician, he would simply have to starve. The thought of being electrocuted made his hands tremble, and whenever he had to change out a light bulb, he would only do so if everyone in the house went outside, preventing anyone from turning the light switch on while his hands where so close to the socket. His doctor had diagnosed him with a mild case of electrophobia, but Alan shrugged it off, deciding that it wasn’t so bad to have one irrational fear.

Making his way around to the front of the house, Alan heard the sound of a vehicle coming down the dirt road. It was Ole Man Benson, driving his old Jeep Cherokee, slowly maneuvering around the potholes and washouts created by yesterday’s weather. Alan met him at the beginning of his driveway, offering a nod and smile. “Mornin, Mister Benson. Beautiful day, ain’t it?”

Mister Benson was wearing his usual getup; dark blue slacks and a white buttoned-down shirt. As the air was a bit chilly, he had also donned a blue windbreaker. “God damn roads,” he said angrily, “gonna tear this car all to pieces before it’s over with.”

He handed a newspaper to Alan, who took it and stepped back to give the vehicle a once-over. It was a mid-nineties Cherokee that had certainly seen better days. The metallic blue paint, having dulled over the years, was heavily caked with mud.

“Oh, I’m sure Mike and Eddie will hit the roads with the tractors first thing in the morning.” Alan said as he leaned into the passenger side window.

The Jeep’s interior wasn’t in any better shape than the exterior, but instead of mud, the dashboard and upholstery were covered in reddish-gray dust, no doubt from the same dirt roads Mister Benson traversed everyday on his paper route.

“Any damage to your place?” He asked as he looked past Alan.

“Nah, just some limbs down, nothing major. Gonna call the power company in a minute to have ‘em pull a branch off my line. How ‘bout your place?”

Mister Benson had a small singlewide mobile home on three acres just a few roads down. He’d been living alone since his wife passed away two years ago, and Alan made it a point to swing by once a week to check on him.

“Just a few limbs,” Mister Benson said. “I’m payin that kid next door five dollars to pick em up.”

Alan nodded with a smile. “Alright, thanks for the paper.”

He held up his copy of the Sunday Times. “Don’t forget, we’re havin a cookout this weekend. My wife is makin her peach cobbler.”

Mister Benson mulled this over for a moment, and then nodded. “Wouldn’t wanna miss that.” He said matter-of-factly, “I’ll be there.”

The Jeep lurched forward and led Mister Benson down the road to finish his paper route, and Alan made his way back to the house.

He came in through the laundry room, and then made his way into the kitchen to put his empty coffee mug into the sink and the newspaper on the breakfast table. Denise, Alan’s wife of 13 years, was talking to her mother on the telephone. They did that every Sunday morning, rain or shine, and Alan smiled and offered a wink as he walked past her to check on his kids. Denise smiled back, giving a wink of her own, but didn’t skip a conversational beat.

Denise was short and pretty. She had long golden brown hair that hung down in loose waves. Her eyes were hazel colored and her lips were full. She had been prom queen in high school, and had committed herself to a daily workout routine to maintain her figure over the years. She was very fit, physically and mentally, and Ala|||Your paragraphs are so long that I stop being interested in reading it. Also, I don%26#039;t know if I%26#039;d keep reading after a depressing start with rain and a sort of nasty weather.|||I could only read the first part and it didn%26#039;t look...too...good,...I think is the word.

It could be considered better than some crap posted on this website, I%26#039;ll give you that, but I just didn%26#039;t like how you described some things. %26quot;nasty%26quot; %26quot;admired mother nature at her finest%26quot;

naaah they just don%26#039;t work very much.

If you get what I%26#039;m saying work on it and then maybe it would be better.|||i think that it%26#039;s pretty good, i like the use of description you used. it was hard to read but that was only because things weren%26#039;t indented so when it%26#039;s on a Word document it%26#039;s probably ten times easier to read. hope you keep writing this it sounds great.

answer mine please:

http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?…|||i love this. you gave great description and imagery. i think youre very talented. unlike the other stories i read on here, this wasnt painful to read at all. i just loved it.|||heya!! emm yeaa i tink ur good... u can write well anyway... and describe things good... Just a little tip~~%26gt;%26gt;%26gt; i tink u shud wriet thought to himself then told himself... i jsut tink it sound betta yeaa??... emm i i only read a little bit cz i tot it was boring.. no offense... i just have to read book with a lot of action... well gud luck...:D|||Honestly I could only get past the first two sentences.....

After forcing myself to read some more here are some things to think about:

We know it rained and it%26#039;s clear now, we don%26#039;t need anymore description of the weather. I mean you have 2 whole paragraphs about weather.....

Your writing is good, grammar, sentence structure all of that... but you need to let us readers have some Imagination. Start the painting, but let us finish.

Here is what I mean: your 1st para:

It was one of those days where everything felt brand new, Alan Kinsley had told himself. It had rained nonstop the day before, with one band of rain after another moving through the northern panhandle region of Florida. It had been windy and nasty for nearly twenty-four hours, when finally, the skies cleared and made way for abundant sunshine. Alan was standing in his backyard, coffee mug in one hand, a menthol cigarette in the other, admiring Mother Nature at her finest

My suggestion:

Finally the stormed had seized. It had been storming for days moving through the northern panhandle region of Florida. Alan felt reborn that morning, standing in his backyard, coffee mug in one hand, a menthol cigarette in the other, admiring Mother Nature at her finest.

Then you really don%26#039;t even need the 2nd or 3rd paragraphs you could just Briefly explain all of that when Ole Man Benson drives up - That%26#039;s about as far as I could get|||I%26#039;m a descriptive writer like you. I give a %26#039;matrix-like%26#039; description of just about everything. Some readers hate it, others appreciate the clarity.

The thing that makes it even more suiting is that the descriptions appear to be Alan%26#039;s. We are sort of in his head and seeing things through his eyes. How much he appreciates the day after a storm, we know where he lives, we know how he lives, we know he%26#039;s a caring neighbor, we know he thinks his wife is beautiful, how long he%26#039;s been married and we already know one of his biggest fears and that he%26#039;s a dad. Granted you have plenty of room to include all of that information but it creates a very distinct portrait of this man.

The writing is well done and I don%26#039;t see a problem with the story at all. I%26#039;ve published two contemporary romance novels and I read the genre quite frequently as well as women%26#039;s fiction and even though I%26#039;m an author of it let me tell you some of it is quite plain. But the readers love it because it reminds them of the every day events of their own lives. It makes living much more acceptable. Not everyone is going to have quests, or meet vampires, or date sexy bronzed gods with schlongs to their knees. Some women and men just live peaceful lives with normal life crisis that cause for them to change and grow and seeing it in a book makes them feel validated. I think this is a good solid start. I hope the rest of the work will be equally a good.

I am so crushed I cannot believe my own sister did this?

my parents evicted my older sister, so she is basically dis-owning the whole family. I am not involved and dont even live w/ my parents but she returned my birthday present and christmas present i had gotten her and had pictures of me in the box w/ my face scribbled out and ripped up. She left the house unlocked and busted up the keys rather than returning them to my parents. (its ok because they planned on changing the locks anyways). She also stole all the appliances such as stove, refrigerator. She took all the blinds and curtains that my parents had purchased, she even removed all the covers over the light switches, took out every light bulb, removed the toilet seat cover, even the little toilet paper thing that you put the roll on, she took the shower curtain and rod, she took down all the ceiling fans, and urinated all over the bathroom floor. All the toys me and my parents had bought my neice and nephew she had thrown out in the garbage. She also removed the outside hose, and cut down the rope for the flag pole. The also found trash scattered throughout the yard and inside the house. My parents are consulting there attourney and I guess suing her for the stole appliances and damages. But why did she do this. By the way both her and her husband work and had the money to find another place, and they were given a notice with a long time to move.|||If she%26#039;s married, why on earth was she living with her parents?!? Also, that%26#039;s a big job to move all that stuff out of the house, she obviously had a lot of help and a big truck. Are you making this up? If not, WOW, she%26#039;s crazy. I don%26#039;t have a clue why she would do that and can%26#039;t even begin to think of why unless you provide the reason your parents kicked her (and her husband?) out of the house.|||There could be a lot of reasons why. That sounds really fishy though. Either she has anger problems or she might even be doing drugs. People who are heavily into drugs will do just about anything, including stealing, to get money to purchase them. A person in the right frame of mind wouldn%26#039;t be doing that. Urinating in the floor? Wow. That actually makes me really sad. I don%26#039;t blame your parents for doing that. She might have some mental issues if it%26#039;s not drugs or anger problems... maybe a combo of it all.|||Wow, she should consider anger management. She doesn%26#039;t seem to be a mentally healthy individual. I would try to protect my feelings and physical self from her for the time being, and not even answer her calls. She seems dangerous. You might want to get a restraining order from her, or ask your parents to do this, I don%26#039;t know anyone in their right minds who seeks out that sort of revenge to acquaintances, much less their on blood.|||And i thought my sister was crazy!!|||Wow, you had to ask this more than once. Will you do the same if you%26#039;re her?

Electromagnetism applications?

If anyone could help me out with any of these 15 questions it would really appreciated

1. A small bar magnet is hidden inside a tennis ball. Describe at least 2 different experiments you could do to find the location of the N-pole and the S-pole of the magnet inside the ball without using another magnetic.

2. A room contains a strong, uniform magnetic field. A loop of fine wire in the room has current flowing through it. You rotate the loop until there is no tendency for it to rotate as a result of the magnetic field. What is the direction of the magnetic field relative to the plane of the loop? How does this situation apply to the operation of motors?

3. Research superconductors. Iron, nickel, and cobalt are electrical conductors. So are superconductors. But do they behave the same way in magnetic fields? Explain.

4. A magnet can attract a piece of iron that is not a permanent magnet. A charged strip of acetate can attract an uncharged insulator. Describe the microscopic effects that make these two similar.

5. An electric field can exert a force on a charged particle. A magnetic field can exert a force on a charged particle as well. Can either force change the kinetic energy of the particle? Explain.

6. Is the magnetic force the Earth exerts on a compass needle greater than, equal to, or less that the force the compass needle exerts on Earth? Explain.

7. Find a diagram of the magnetic field lines around the Earth and include it in your report. Observe the density of the lines and explain where the magnetic field is strongest, the poles or the equator. Now, use this knowledge to explain at what location would the circular paths followed by charged particles have larger radii.

8. You are lost in the woods but you have a compass. Unfortunately, the red paint marking the N-pole of the compass has worn off. You do have a flashlight with a battery and a length of wire. Describe how you could identify the N-pole.

9. Each electron in a piece of iron is like a tiny magnet. The iron, however, is not a magnet. Explain. Use this concept to answer the question: If you break a magnet in two, will you have a north-pole piece and a south-pole piece?

10. A strong current is suddenly switched on in a wire. No force acts on it. Can you conclude that there is no magnetic field at the location of the wire? Explain.

11. Research alternating current. The direction of AC voltage changes 120 times each second. Does that mean a device connected to an AC voltage alternately delivers and accepts energy?

12. A transformer is connected to a battery through an on/off switch. The secondary circuit contains a light bulb. Which of these statements best describes when the light bulb will be lit? a) as long as the switch is turned on; b) only the moment the switch is turned on; c) only the moment the switch is turned off. EXPLAIN.

13. Thomas Edison proposed distributing electrical energy using constant voltages (DC). George Westinghouse proposed using AC. Which was chosen and why is it a very economical choice after all?

14. When you drop a magnet (N-pole first) down a copper tube it seems to float down. Diagram the set up. EXPLAIN using the concepts of induction, Lenz鈥檚 Law, Conservation of Energy and your right-hand rules.

15. A bicycle鈥檚 headlight is powered by a generator that rubs against one of the wheels. Is the bike harder to pedal when the generator is lighting the lamp? Explain.|||Lol i got the same worksheet, I%26#039;m doing it right now so i don%26#039;t have much time to go into greater explanation.

1. Use compass/sprinkle iron fillings on tennis ball

5. Electric field-Yes, force opposes motion Magnetic field-No, force is perpendicular to motion

6. The same, Newton%26#039;s third law-

8. line the wire with compass, make current with battery, use right hand rule to see which way the magnetic field of the wire goes, compass north should point that way

10. Yes, if there was, the wire would move

does your worksheet only say to do 10 out of the 15?

Can I sue an auto service center for damages to my vehicle?

I had taken my vehicle to a local auto center for an oil change which included their 24 point inspection. The technician assured me all fluids were topped off and that maybe it was a computer or electrical problem, later that evening i rechecked the fluids and the reservoir was empty which was why the light never turned off. Secondly he told me that my reverse lights were inoperable and needed repair. He tried new bulbs and checked the fuses but to no avail neither worked. Again I tried to check the reverse lights myself considering he lied about the other work I wanted to see what else he could be lying about, so as I was backing up the driver door swung open hitting a pole and damaging the car parked next to it. Is there any way I can attribute any of this accident to the auto service center for telling me there was a problem with my vehicle which left me to go behind their work and in the process damage my vehicle.....|||You can sue anybody for anything. Especially in the USA.

But what you really want to know is if you have any chance of winning such a lawsuit...and the answer is no. Regardless of what the service center did, or did not, do to your car -- it is always the driver%26#039;s responsiblity to maintain control of the vehicle. Period.

If the service center had done something to the door of your car that caused it to pop open while you were backing up, then you might have a chance of winning such a lawsuit, but otherwise, chalk it up to experience and let your insurance handle it (or pay it out of your own pocket).

P.S., The next time you want to check your backup lights, put the car in reverse, then shut-off the engine, set your parking brake, and go look. No need to actually have the car moving. You may have to put the ignition switch back into the %26quot;on%26quot; position, but don%26#039;t start the engine.|||Sorry, accidents that happen like that are still your fault, as it is up to the driver to not hit other objects. You can%26#039;t blame your actions on a faulty repair because you have to check it out. Simply because someone can%26#039;t repair something, like your lights, doesn%26#039;t mean he%26#039;s at fault for them not working, if they weren%26#039;t working before, either. It just may be a more complicated problem than the service center is trained to do. At least he tried. You may have a fluid leak, too, although they should check to see if it leaks down fast. Again, it may or may not be their fault. Bottom line is, you%26#039;re responsible for the actions of the vehicle when you are in the driver%26#039;s seat, so accept it, and move on.|||You can sue them but your still at fault for the damage to the other vehicle. You where the one checking the lights. Even thou they told you that they needed repaired, you where the one backing the car up when it hit the pole. They may have to give you money back for the fluids that wasn%26#039;t topped off and for the bulbs but this is small change. Not worth taking to court. Turn the damage into your insurance and be done with it.|||I work for a major insurer and have seen EVERYTHING -- you will be laughed at to your face if you threaten lawsuit for this idiocy. But please, go for it! If you find a lawyer stupid enough to take a case like this he will just bill you thousands of dollars in legal fees and get you nothing in return.|||its your fault the door opened....fluid levels, theres.|||No. You are responsible for it. You should be more careful.

How do I change light bulbs that are very high up?

I have extremely high cathedral ceilings and even my husbands extra tall extension ladder that can be made into an a-frame does not reach. They are small spotlight style bulbs - 3 in a row. They have been out for a while now - I don%26#039;t want to pay for a professional to replace them. I once saw a pole with a %26#039;grabber%26#039; on the end that is for changing light bulbs but not sure if this will work, as I%26#039;ve not heard of anyone using them. Are they any good? Does anyone have any suggestions?|||well this is what my dad did

he got the right length of a wood stick and got double sided extra sticky tape on the end of it. connect it to the burnt out lightbulb and twist it till it comes out. then replace it with the new light buld and do that same thing cept twisting it in. goodluck!|||You can purchase these groovy devices...

I need help getting a broken light bulb out?

I have a light bulb that the glass came out of when it burned out. The glass came out without breaking at all. The bulb base is shorter than the fixture. The fixture is on the ceiling over the stairs and about 15-18 feet up. Its a standard home socket used in the USA for the last 50 years+. I tried using a potato on a pole, but not even close. Is there anything that can screw into that or am I stuck attempting a ladder, because the ladder cannot rest near enough I will have to stretch and risk life and limb to change it. I also have terrible balance.|||****TURN OFF THE CIRCUIT BREAKER TO THAT SOCKET!

#1 Measure the diameter of an existing light bulb screw part.

#2 Find a pole that is near the same size (paint roller extensions might be good). Put a damp rag over the top of the pole and insert the rag into the socket. Don%26#039;t forget which way to turn the pole.

#3 The damp rag should provide enough friction to help unstick this bulb end.|||I don%26#039;t see a way to do it without going up there with some pliers.|||The base is stuck (welded) to the socket. You probably won%26#039;t be able to get it loose without getting up there with a pair of needle nose pliers. You could try shaping the end of the pole to wedge into the base and twist it out.|||Cut a whole potatoe in half and push it into the bulb and turn it as you are taking the bulb out. Tape the potatoe to a long stick and stand on a stool or a small ladder and push it toward the bulb. Then throw it away.

Good Luck!|||Place ladder under light fixture. Get a strong plank of wood and place between step and ladder - stand on plank with pliers to remove the broken light part. You could also try long-handled tongs.|||Just get a whole new light fixture and hire a handyman to install it.|||TURN THE ELECTRICITY OFF before you try anything. If you have poor balance you don%26#039;t have any business on a ladder. If the potato trick isn%26#039;t working, you need to call a handyman or draft a teenager and pay him a few bucks to do the high work.|||The potato trick that Clown suggested works. I%26#039;ve used it.|||I would just carry a flashlight around.

How do you reach a light bulb 40ft up indoors?

Need to change a few light bulbs in a historic restaurant, yeah i got plenty of ways to reach it, but if in the 3% chance I drop a ladder Im screwed,

any help, can an extension pole and grip reach that far?|||That would be done with a A-frame latter.|||Home Depot has the perfect extension poles with an accessory for gripping the bulb and releasing.|||Might want to rent a lift.

A extension pole is 16- 20 ft then a 12 ft step and a 6 foot man that is not scared of heights might get it.

Call a electrician and have them give you a bid to change them.

No good answer for you sorry that%26#039;s tall.|||If you have the room, a scissor lift is the best way, and you can rent them. I%26#039;ve used them several times and they are surprisingly stable and not expensive to rent. Or you could use both, get a 20 foot scissor lift and a 20 foot extension pole (easier to handle).

I would try a fiberglass telescoping pole first :

I am looking for a tool to change a broken light bulb.?

I have 30 foot ceilings with recessed(can) lights and change my light bulbs with a tool on a pole. One of my bulbs is broken and I don%26#039;t know how to get it out. I can%26#039;t get on a ladder to reach it either. Someone told me there%26#039;s some kind of tool I can put on the end of my pole that will work. I can%26#039;t find anything like that though. I need a LINK to where I can buy such a thing. Please help and thanks.|||you could find a way to attach a potato (cut in half) to a broomstick and use it to stick onto the broken end of the bulb and slowly unscrew it. But that%26#039;s if you wanted to go the %26quot;el-cheap-o%26quot; route.|||Lowe%26#039;s and Home Depot have em. Make sure they will reach 30 feet. It is basically a spring type socket that goes over the bulb and then you turn the bulb out. Put a new one in the thingy and put it back in.|||Menard%26quot;s Lowe%26#039;s, and Home Depot. I have seen them at Lowes a few times.

I am not sure how long they are but I know at church we bought one and it can remove the bulbs that are over twenty feet in the air. It uses springs to help hold the bulbs and then tightens around them when you turn them.

I have found for future use we spray a little WD-40 on the base of the bulbs before we put them back in. This does help with corrosion and when we have to take them back out. Also something else we have done is to buy 130 volt light bulbs not 120 volt bulbs they last longer and we have not had to replace any of these 130 volt bulbs since we put them in.|||go to homedepor or ikea|||I usually use a cut potato but since your ceilings are so high you need an adaptor for your pole.

http://www.homedepot.com/h_d1/N-5yc1vZ1x鈥?/a>

Go to home depot or lowes and see what they have to attach to your pole.

Try the baking potao cut to fit on the end of the pole using duct tape.

How many Poles does it take to change a light bulb ?

Only one but he%26#039;ll bring 1,000,000 friends just in case .|||And the bastard still hasn%26#039;t done it|||100000 of You 1 Of Me and 49999999 of your mom!|||HMM...I DON%26#039;T GET IT.|||didnt you hear about the one who had 1000000 poles but not even one friend to beg to change the bulb? hahaha .... yours is very decent and nice........ keep on rolling...|||ya and it%26#039;s still not screwed in|||Really stupid so-called joke, Ugh.

The light bulbs I put into the pole lamp at the end of our driveway keep on shattering.?

I%26#039;ve tried using both convential and halogen bulbs- still blow and break. I checked voltage using a VOM and is OK. I%26#039;ve changed the lamp head thinking the rain water was getting to the hot bulb. Any suggestions?|||I just want to underscore the importance of what previous poster says about halogen bulbs. Learned this the hard way, myself! Any grime or the slightest oil from your hand or fingers will cause the bulb to blow out very quickly, if not immediately.

Have you dried putting in a very low wattage bulb (even though it doesn%26#039;t give the desired lighting effect), just as an experiment, to see whether it is as vulnerable to whatever elements might be at play here? That might tell you something.|||Find out which neighbor has a bb gun or a kid with a bb gun.|||If the bulbs have a blueish black run when they blow out it%26#039;s water causing the problem. Check screws, it doesn%26#039;t take but a couple of drops to blow a bulb. If you use a halogen do not touch with your hands. The grease from a finger can cause it to blow. Use gloves.|||If the glass on the bulb is breaking, you have a temperature differential problem. That is, the bulb is getting so hot compared to the relative temperature outside, that the glass cannot withstand the temperature difference, and it will shatter. It is shattering soon after it comes on, not just after it turns off, and definitely not while it is sitting dormant. Kind of like running a jar of pickles under hot water so you that can get the lid off. It may suddenly shatter. Same principle. Sudden temperature difference. It%26#039;s the same thing that causes most heart attacks. Most of us are not used to sudden temperature differences in our body, and the heart goes into thrombosis (rapid, uncontrolled beating ot the heart). But anyway, to answer your question, I would suggest compact fluorescent light bulbs. They operate at a very cool temperature (you can touch them while they%26#039;re on), they last a long, long time while saving as much as 60% of the energy consumed by an incandescent light bulb, and they throw out more lumens (light). Hope this helps.

Rex|||I suspect the bulb not tight enough or a bad fixture. Either one will cause excessive heat at the bulb base and cause very premature bulb failure.|||ask a tection|||Don%26#039;t rule out the wiring. A friend of mine had a similar problem with a twist. The bulbs wouldn%26#039;t last long, but the earth worms in his garden sure made it lush around the light pole. The wrong kind of wire was used and it ran right through his garden and got watered every other day. One day I got a shock helping him pull weeds in that garden and that%26#039;s how we figured out the problem. The wire was replaced and no more problem. Could of been worse.

Can you tell me what kind of light bulb I need?

I work at a campground. There is a light pole that is too high to get with a ladder. We need to change it. We will rent a lift to get to it and change it, but we live in a small town and will have to order this light bulb. I know it is a mercury vapor light and it looks like a used condom. I know it sounds funny, but from where we stand, that%26#039;s what it looks like. If you can help me out, I would appreciate it. |||ha ha. I know the shape of bulb you are talking about.

My father had a couple. I might still have one around. His were %26quot;self ballasting mercury vapor%26quot; bulbs. The ballast was built in the base like we now see with the compact fluorescent bulbs. But does NOT mean that is what yours are.

I read somewhere that companies make their bulbs in a little different shapes do they can patent them since the technology is all the same. The shape of that bulb may only tell the manufacturer and not what type it is. Your fixture may have a ballast.

If it is a metal light pole maybe it has a model number on the pole itself and you can research that to find out what type of bulb the fixture takes. Check carefully around the base.

Sorry, and Good Luck.

|||Unfortunately there will be no way to tell until you take it out. There are many different bulbs that go in those fixtures and they are wattage sensitive to the ballast that is in the fixture. You might check with the bookkeeping dept for the campground to see if they have a record of any bulbs purchased for that fixture or a record of that fixture itself.|||Andy is right. To find out the wattage, you need to remove the lamp.

The wattage can vary widely from 35W-1000W.

You may also want to consider that they make special fittings for changing these exact types of lamps using a long pole or pipe.

Good luck!

How many poles do you need to change a light bulb?

you only need one pole, the one that does not conduct electricity. Better, turn the electricity of your hous off.|||One less than the number of spics, dagos or chicanos.|||If the electrician did your circuitry properly, you must be sure the power be off with the 鈥榮witch-off鈥?position of the power switch. You may be shocked otherwise!!!! If you live in the country side you better use double switch when both wires leading to the bulb may be cut off.

How do you change light bulbs on a garage roof top in pole lights?

WITH VERY LONG LADDER.

What's the easiest way to remove a stuck light bulb?

I have a pole lamp, and when I tried to change the light bulb the other day, it wedged in the socket, and now I can%26#039;t turn it either way. I%26#039;m scared it%26#039;s going to break in my hand if I twist too hard. Will I have to break it, and take the remainder out with plyers, or is there an easier way? Thanks!|||Put gloves on and assume it will break.|||sounds like your going to have to break the bulb..|||i say break it and then cut a potato in half, push over remainder of bulb and twist out (i saw it on a tv show once)|||believe this or not but it works, cut the power to it. then take a potato and snip the end of it off then press the potato onto the broke bulb and screw it right out.|||seems to me if you broke it and took the remainder out with pliers you would be done by now|||The second answer sounds good, If the bulb does break,

replace the socket with a new one - they%26#039;re only 3 or 4 bucks|||OK, chances are you%26#039;re gonna have to break the bulb and then try this. I tried it and it worked but it got a little messy, lol. Take a raw potato and cut it in half, hold it and use the newly cut area to push up into/onto the base of the broken bulb and then twist. Try a few times to get it really wedged on there and it should work. Like I said, I heard it somewher before and remembered it when I bulb got stuck in a fan and then broke in my hand.

P.S. There%26#039;s supposedly something about the potato not conducting electricity either.|||Obviously make sure the lamp is unplugged. Put on heavy gloves and hold the lamp over a garbage pail.Try turning the bulb back and forth a little bit ,this may free the bulb up. If this doesn%26#039;t work, just try to turn it out ,and if it breaks it breaks. If broken, try the potato thing first. If that doesn%26#039;t work take a needle nose pliers and carefully grab the edge of the part of light bulb that is left and try to unscrew it. If you are successful ,try putting a little lubricant on the bulb socket that is made for bulbs next time. Good luck.|||Try something in hand for better traction, i.e. rubber glove or the back of a bath mat. Also,try tightening it just a bit before attempting to loosen it. Sometimes works. I hope it isn%26#039;t crossthreaded.|||try a glove with a rubber band or 3 around it...great protection and grip...also put safety glasses on.

older sockets heat up over time and the bulb just gets stuck in there good. being an electrician, i have seen this many times.|||If you can get one of those rubber jar lide remover around some of the bulb youcan unscrew it with alittle pressure its easier if you

have big hands|||I%26#039;m probably too late with my suggestion but I agree that you will have to break the bulb off. But, forget the potato bit. Just get your screwdriver, put one turn of electrical tape over the end of the handle then turn the tape 180 degrees, sticky side out and wrap a few more turns on the handle. Remember, on the round end of the handle. Then just stick it in the socket, push, turn and the broken socket will come right out. I learned this trick more years ago than I care to tell. I figured it out when I didn%26#039;t have a potato in my tool belt when I was 25 feet off the ground on a light pole. %26lt;G%26gt; And it had power in it.

Is there some sort of lights available that are on a pulley system so I can lower it down to the ground to change it? A couple contractors say they have not heard of one, but I have found they often don%26#039;t know it all. anyone?|||if you are using a standard screw in incandescent bulb you can go to home depot and get a long pole the has a cup on the end of it that holds the light bulb in a cage it grips the bulbs as you turn it and allows you to unscrew it and screw it back in they work really will the pole is made of fiber glass or heavy plastic any way it wont hurt you while you change bulbs and you don%26#039;t have to fall off a ladder but don%26#039;t try using it if raining you wont look good well done hahaha you can find it in lighting dept or in the tools if you don%26#039;t ask them about it i found a couple of links that should help the last one is and extension to the first it is just a thread pole like the ones that you use on paint roller
