What causes a household voltage to increase and decrease?

The voltage in the house that my friend rents in peculiar. At times the lights will dim and brighten seemingly on their own. The brightness may also change when other lights are turned on or off, if the fridge door is opened, etc. The house is small, with a well pump, water heater, 2 bedroom, kitchen, living room, 1 bathroom, outside lights, etc. The landlord%26#039;s house operates off the same transformer, and he has no problems. An electrician checked it out and found that when the voltage drops on one pole, the other increases, and vice versa. No matter what the sum of the poles is about 248. Each pole had the same number of single pole breakers, but the electrician moved them so all single pole breaker are on one pole, and the problem is still there. They also saw the same problems when they tried different combinations of unplugging the fridge, unscrewing light bulbs, shutting breakers off, etc. f%26#039;d like to use my ohmmeters and lengths of wire to check the continuity of ground, neutral, and hot lines between different outlets and light fixtures when the main breaker is off. It seems to me that there%26#039;s a problem with a ground and/or neutral line somewhere, but I%26#039;m not sure where. Maybe somwhere the neutral and hot lines are switched. Any ideas about what could cause this?|||Good observation on your part about the ground. That sounds like a good place to start. Some houses use aluminum wire from the panel to the grounding rod outside or to a city water line going thru the ground and those connections get loose after a while from the wire expanding and contracting all the time. Do a pure copper connection from your panel to the ground source

I would just pound in a new copper 8-10 foot ground rod outside or make a new clean connection on your water line (grounding rod is better I think, especially if you can find a %26quot;wetter%26quot; area )

Most houses now require 2 grounding sources set a certain distance apart. So put in a new ground rod and connect it up to the main panel and try that. If you have really dry soil in your area, use the longest rod you can find. If the soil gets really dry, it%26#039;s not a very good ground.

The other thing I would check is to see if the house is wired anywhere with aluminum wire. Aluminum is good, but it has a tendency to get loose at the connection points and get a layer of oxide that causes higher resistance. If you have that wire, just sand off the ends a little and put some dielectric grease on there to help stop oxidation and retighten connections

additional details:

If it isn%26#039;t the ground being bad, it could be the wires going from the electric meter to the main panel. If the wires are loose inside the electric meter that go to your panel, that dimming could be caused by arcing in the loose connections. Dimming in general is caused by either broken wires or loose connections or bad grounds, so it has to be one of the three if the other house is fine and comes from the same transformer.

You should get permission from your electric company to remove the meter cover and look at those connectors and also recheck the main fuse entry into the panel|||There is not enough power going into your house.

Since the total voltage is remaining constant, but the individual sums is varying, that tells me that the center point is moving. The center point is the ground. Obviously it is not %26quot;tagged%26quot; correctly and is shifting around depending on your branch loads.|||Get a small plug in outlet checker. It looks like a stand 3 prong plug with a set of lights on it. You plug it into each outlet and it will tell you if the outlet is wired wrong or as a previsous persaid you have a floating ground.

This will help isolate the problem.

Do this SOON.

Is this story too light-hearted?

I am a light sleeper who awakens at the slightest provocation. I keep a night light burning because I tend to wake up a lot during the night. No matter what, I am always up before first light. Last night I was awakened by a huge crash very near to the house. Grabbing a flash light, I went to the window. I could see fairly well due to the moonlight and the illumination provided by the porch light, but my visual inspection shed little light on what happened. When I went outside to see, I saw a pole leaning against the new light stand I put by the garage yesterday. I decided not to wait until morning to move it when I would be busy with the light chores my wife always has for me to do. It was a light pole, so I was able to move it easily, but when I stood up after setting it down, I got lightheaded.

I frequently get light-headed and my doctor, a very light hearted man, is treating me regularly. He is usually a beacon of hope, but the other day he told me that he saw no light at the end of the tunnel in my case. He advised me to come directly to his office, day or night, the next time I had a spell. He wants to try a new laser light technique that is supposed to lighten or stop such spells.

I hate driving over there at night though. I have to drive through the red-light district, and there are a lot of traffic lights. Deciding to wait until morning, I headed back to the house but as I reached the steps, every thing went dark. I woke up in an ambulance with red lights flashing and the siren wailing. Fortunately, my doctor had been called and arrived at the hospital just as I did. He had a great idea and using the laser light he brought with him, managed to keep my lights from going out permanently.

The experience changed my life. Though I鈥檒l never be light on my feet again, I have seen the light and my life is now full of lightness and joy. I work in my garden daily, tending the bulbs and seeds I planted. Its light work and gives me much joy. I plan to pass the rest of my days out of the spotlight and hope to see the light of redemption someday.|||You need to lighten up a bit,get a girlfriend to be the light of your life and stop smoking lights,eat a light meal that will stop you feeling light headed but you will still be light hearted|||Light hearted hard to say. It was an easy read to me which is a good thing. How ever, what happened in the Huge Crash??

and I would say you need to build your caricatures up more so I care about them then it would be more heavy hearted.

What do you think of this?

I found this scene in a journal i have of bits of writing that I keep for fun. I don%26#039;t even remember what story I wrote this for, but i thought it was pretty good for something I don%26#039;t remember writing. Tell me what you think!

When Demonica stepped through the door with a candle in her hand, all she heard was the muffled clink of chains, then everything was silent. Beyond her tiny circle of candlelight, all was dark. She took five more steps into the black. The clack of each footstep against the cement echoed as loud as thunder compared to the silence all around.

Demonica waved her candle through the air until it found a boy with eyes and hair as black as night. He was leaning lazily against the wall with his wrists handcuffed to a pole next to him, observing his surroundings for the first time he had the chance. There wasn%26#039;t much to observe. He was in a small, concrete room with a few rusty pipes running along one wall and a shattered light-bulb hanging from a wire on the ceiling. Then he turned to Demonica.

%26quot;What do you want, brat?%26quot;

Demonica flashed a smile. %26quot;Well, I was planning on helping you, but if you%26#039;re going to act like that it might just change my mind.%26quot;

He glared at her with eyes that said: %26#039;take a step closer, you won%26#039;t like what happens next.%26#039; He smirked. %26quot;Don%26#039;t waste your time. I don%26#039;t need anyone%26#039;s help, especially yours.%26quot;

%26quot;Says the kid who%26#039;s still helplessly handcuffed to a wall.%26quot;

%26quot;Not for long.%26quot;

%26quot;Sure. I%26#039;d like to see you try to get out of here.%26quot;

%26quot;Watch me.%26quot;

%26quot;I am.%26quot;

The boy looked down at his handcuffs and scowled, which made Demonica let out a laugh. It looked like what used to be the superman of crime had turned into Lois Lane.

Demonica set the candle on the floor next to his feet. %26quot;You%26#039;re Daniel, right? Danny Jenson?%26quot;

Danny just kept scowling at her.

%26quot;Right. I%26#039;ve heard a lot about you, and I get why you hate me so much. You think that good girls and villains shouldn%26#039;t mix.%26quot; Demonica reached into her pocket and pulled out a bobby pin, taking the rubber end off of it and bending it twice at the end. %26quot;I don%26#039;t think you%26#039;re a villain. Angry at the world, maybe, but not a villain. And you know, you%26#039;ve never really gotten to know any of the good guys.%26quot; She held the bent bobby pin out to Danny and he took it. %26quot;Maybe you should start now.%26quot;

Demonica turned and walked out the door, leaving Danny alone with the bobby pin. He slid it into the keyhole on one handcuff, wiggled it from side to side, and heard a click. He did the same to the other cuff, and the handcuffs slid off his wrists.

Getting to know one of the good guys. Now that was an idea to get used to. Maybe it wasn%26#039;t such a bad idea. After all, Demonica did let him go...

%26quot;Naw.%26quot; Danny said out loud. Being bad was too much fun to change sides now. That brat had made a mistake letting him go, and he was going to make sure she knew it.

Right as soon as he found a way out of that place.
